A more tidy way to present multiple filters on a page
Advanced Filtering Concept

Creation of wire frame mock-ups for an advanced filtering solution to address a pain point identified in user testing of a dashboard.  There were too many filters on the page and the users wanted a better way to control filtering.

My Role

I interviewed end users during user testing and identified a pain point in the filtering controls on a dashboard application. I brainstormed and created a series of mock-ups for potential filtering solutions. This was the final version chosen.

Discovery

During qualitative user testing it was quite obvious that the filtering solution on a prototype was causing issues for users. There were just too many filters on the page.

Many users had trouble making sense of the numerous dropdown boxes, multiple selections weren’t possible, and knowing what filters were active at any given time was impossible.

Medium Fidelity Wireframes

The focus of the design was to allow any number of filtering controls with any number of options per control. Filter items with fewer controls would present as a list. Those with more controls would be a scrolling list. A date picker was also an option.

Upon selecting a set of filter criteria, a chicklet would be shown for each. Each selected filter criteria item could be dismissed individually, clicking on a chicklet would show other filter criteria in the category allowing the user to add other filters not yet added, or the panel could be opened and all filtering options cleared.

The prototype presented a cleaner and more user friendly solution to the ‘many filters’ challenge.
